I just thought these poor guys deserve our thoughts. I hope they recover. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4808836.stm Two drug trial men critically ill | |||||
Myfanwy Marshall told BBC News her boyfriend's body was badly swollen and she had been told he could die. Relatives are said to be unhappy with the information given from the firm behind the anti-inflammatory drug. The families had been given "mixed messages" during two meetings with pharmaceutical company TeGenero AG, which manufactures the drug and Parexel, which ran the trial, it was claimed. Lawyer Ann Alexander, representing one of the critically ill men, told the BBC the companies had been asked whether any of the animals used to test the drug had died. "I understand that yesterday, they were told a dog had died during the testing. Today that was denied," she said. But TeGenero has described the reactions as "shocking developments" and said the new medicine showed no signs of problems in earlier tests. Ms Alexander added: "These are ordinary health people who have been involved in a clinical trial and unfortunately everything seems to have gone wrong. "I think the most scary thing for the families..is that they don't know what the outcome is going to be". As there was no antidote and doctors did not know what had happened, they were having to treat the patients on a "symptomatic basis", she added. It was the first time the drug TBN1412, designed to treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and leukaemia, had been tested on humans. Within hours of taking it on Monday, the six young volunteers had to be admitted to intensive care. Ms Marshall, 35, whose boyfriend is critically ill, said the normally healthy 28-year-old's face was so puffed, he "looks like the Elephant Man". She said he was completely lifeless, unable even to move an eyelid. "They just keep saying he's very, very sick and we are doing all we can," she added. The hospital says it is continuing to treat the men's "inflammatory disorder" and would do all it could to support the families. TeGenero's chief scientific officer Thomas Hanke said the company's first concern was making sure the patients got the best treatment possible and to support the familes. He added: "They were shocked, devastated. We deeply understand that they are. We are devastated at these shocking developments which we were not anticipating." An investigation by inspectors from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) at the private research unit on the hospital's grounds has begun. American company Parexel, which runs the unit, said it followed recommended guidelines in its trial. Professor Kent Woods, from the MHRA, said they would be looking at whether the reaction was caused by a manufacturing problem, contamination, a dosing error or whether it was some "completely unanticipated side effect of the drug in humans". The Medical Research Council said that while it was "an unfortunate and extremely rare event", such clinical trials were essential for the development of new and better treatments. |

Last straw?
by happyout inso, my marriage has been in trouble for some time.

So sorry this is happening to you, you're in my thoughts
I can't offer much help or advice other than maybe try to get the credit card problems sorted out before they get any worse. Are there debt counseling services there who can negotiate smaller payments with your creditors? It's apparently not a good idea to consolidate debt as this can end up costing you more money in the long run. (sorry the only possible ideas i do have are from a UK perspective too, I do hope there's something similar where you are)

Hmmm
No problem deciding that one for me. My first day in my first job after leaving school I got asked out on a blind date - silly, naive me took up the offer. The guy was acting like we'd been seeing each other for years - he made me seriously uncomfortable!
Then when I got to work the next day, everyone was laughing at me when I related my awful experience - it turned out that he tried dating all the new starters and he had a reputation as a bit of a letch, those horrid people just didn't tell me.
To top it all off, he wouldn't stop phoning me for another date for weeks after either.
I just feel every time I think about it now!

spiritual food or spiritual poison?

Some food some poison - but I guess no matter how small an amount of poison, that affects the whole of the food.
I've just tried out New York44M's strategy on the current WT articles - and it does work - the next couple of weeks are about the 'little flock' and the 'great crowd' - before trying this, I thought it was just going to be a history lesson!

uncertainty principle
by ballistic in6. the brain is a "dissipative structure" and self-organizes around a least-action principle of minimizing a certain uncertainty relation.. .
this quote is actually talking about the "uncertainty principle" - part of quantum physics... but it made me think of something else,.
do you find as you get older, you become less obsessed with working out all possible outcomes of a situation and trust your senses, or even yourself to determine a course of action.

I'm working on it, I'm not really used to 'thinking to the max' though.
It's hard to work out whether this is a positive or negative reply to your question - I guess that because I've just been 'surviving' most of my life, I've nearly always gone on instinct - but this hasn't always resulted in the best way of dealing with situations. Now, I question more - so does that mean that I am potentially going against my instincts (contrary to the theory) or am I in the process of developing and honing them?
.....Now how's everyone going to react to this answer. Should I have put a different answer. But would they react better or worse to an alternative one???????.......

Do you think the other person took your work pile and can you be certain? (asking because i don't know how many others are there)
Does your boss believe her when she's 'complaining' about you or is the boss reasonably fair? If she has talked about you often enough, should the boss be asking for your input on the matter by now - unless possibly they think she's talking a load of bull!
Maybe she's not used to people being nice to her so wonders what you're up to? (i've been there, done that *sigh*) in which case, possibly you need to cool off on the niceness - but don't turn into a total bitch lol!!!
If she's worked there longer than you then you may have a point about her feeling threatened by the cross training. If you do think she's sabotaging your work, you need to leave her with as few opportunities as possible to do that eg file your 'to do' pile away in a drawer before you go for a break so it would really be obvious that something is going on.
Hope this gives you a few ideas.

OUCH! that's an expensive low price.
If a generous whizz doesn't come along, maybe you could hold on to the drive until an affordable new low price comes around. At least you'll get the pics back even though the other work files may no longer be needed by then.
